VSA Tennessee is now officially Borderless Arts Tennessee. In August, the Board voted to change the name of the organization. Last week, the IRS made that change official.
We are Borderless by using the arts to help people with disabilities reach their dreams; We are Borderless by breaking down barriers for people with disabilities and; We are Borderless as we hope to promote the talents of Tennesseans across the country and across the world.
The design that is incorporated into our logo has significant meaning.
The symbol above is considered a Celtic symbol, but many say it predates the Celts. It is also a symbol that is connected to Native Americans and the ancient Greece. These facts are important since Tennessee has a rich Scots/Irish and Native American heritage. Also, the arts are often connected to the Greeks.
The fact that there are 3 swirls is also significant. The swirls have a similar look to the 3 stars in the TN flag. There are 3 main constituents to the arts: literary, performing and visual arts. Often times disabilities are mentioned by 3 main categories of physical, mental and social. Finally, as mentioned above, Borderless Arts Tennessee views borderless to mean 3 things: reaching goals/dreams, breaking down barriers, and connecting throughout the world. Therefore, the number 3 represents quite a lot to us.
In addition, you helped in selecting this symbol. A few weeks ago, many of you sent in comments to two questions that were posed. We asked what words/images came to mind when thinking about our programs and what words/images came to mind when hearing the words borderless arts. The two most common thoughts about our programs were that they provide opportunities and a sense of community. The words borderless arts made individuals think of something that had no limits and was far reaching. Images that were provided were clouds and ribbons.
The swirls have several meanings. Some of the meanings provided were: Connection, Growth, Direction, Journey, Advancement, Perseverance, Never Ending and Life. In addition, they do have an imagery of both clouds and ribbons.
For the past 16 years, we have provided quality programs throughout the State of Tennessee. We plan to continue those efforts into the future.
Our mission: Borderless Arts Tennessee is a statewide organization committed to inclusive and accessible arts programs for people with disabilities to enhance educational curriculum, enrich creative expression, empower career development, and encourage community engagement.
