VSA TN / Blair Dulcimer Choir

VSA TN / Blair Dulcimer Choir

When Sarah McWhirt Toler (formerly Musgrave) was a senior in high school, she approached VSA TN with an idea. She wanted to visit area schools and expose kids on the Autism Spectrum to the Mountain Dulcimer. She felt that there were many aspects about the dulcimer that would make it a perfect instrument for teaching music to someone with Autism and that it would be a great instrument to provide ensemble opportunities. Sarah not only offered the workshops, she also ran a fund raiser to purchase dulcimers that could be used by a group and formed the first dulcimer choir which was inducted at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Sarah went off to college and Sandy Conaster became the group’s artistic director holding rehearsals at the Blair School of Music who partners with VSA TN on this program. However, Sandy needed to tend to some family matters and left the choir after 4 years of service. At that time, Sarah was graduating from college and she stepped back into this program and has remained its artistic director. Individuals in the program receive private lessons on Tuesday afternoons and evenings through the school year. The group meets the last Saturday of the month in the morning for a group rehearsal. The group performs at various events throughout the year. Currently, the group is welcoming new members for the fall semester. If you know someone on the Autism Spectrum who may wish to be a part of this program, please contact VSA... read more

VSA TN Makes New Friends through Memorial Park Mosaic Wall Project

During the last week of June, VSA TN made a lot of new friends through the Memorial Park Mosaic Wall project, which is under the artistic direction of Yvette Renee. Every day groups came to visit Diamond Studios to make art and groups like Friends Life and New Horizons were new partners for VSA TN. However, we also worked with old friends too as we visited with Sign Club at the summer camp at the Hendersonville Church of Christ. It was a busy week of making art and making friends. This program is provided through funds from the Tennessee Arts Commission, the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee and the Nashville Predators... read more
The Movement Connection

The Movement Connection

For 5 years, the VSA Tennessee Movement Connection has been moving and grooving.  The group meets on Tuesday evenings at the Christ Church YMCA where the participants receive dance instruction, but leave with a lot more than just a knowledge of fancy footwork.  These dancers also learn coordination skills, stay physically fit, make new friends, and get the opportunity to show their skills at numerous community performances.  This program is open to young adults with Down syndrome and is under the artistic direction of Danielle Clement.  If you know someone who may be interested in joining, contact VSA TN. The group is near capacity membership and there are only a few spots left.  ... read more
